PREFACE.
BY the infinite mercies of God the time at length seems to have come when His people will rejoice with gladness to sing His praise in "spiritual song " at the holy seasons of Christmas and Epiphany, Easter, and Harvest. In churches, therefore, where the people of God thus delight to "joy before Him," it will be found by many convenient if the various " Carols for Christian Seasons" can be had bound together in one volume, as well as issued in separate numbers and parts for the use of congregations. Restoration is gradual; Church work is slow; and so it has been an arduous, prolonged, and costly work to restore the use of Carols in Divine Service, and thus make into an act of worship what was well-nigh considered only a recreation at a social gathering. But now they who have begun to love the old, old story and grow familiar with the carol strain at Christmas and Epiphany, go on to desire the helpful song of Easter and Ascension triumph, and at length from victory won through the holy Nativity, the glorious Resurrection, and Ascension of the Saviour, long to lift the Carol of Harvest Home, which tells not only of the ingathered fruits of the earth, but also of the garnered store which we ourselves hope at last to be in the Home of God!
That the Ever Blessed Three in One may bless these Carols to His Church on earth is the prayer of him who has been mercifully spared to gather and bind together this sheaf of human praise to God " Who bath done great things for us already, whereof we rejoice."
To the many Authors and Publishers who have generously helped me in this prolonged effort to produce :t Book of Carols for the great Festivals of the Church, I beg leave .to offer my most grateful thanks.
R. R. CHOPE.
