John Wesley en zijn broer Charles Wesley

John Wesley (1703-1791), de stichter van het Methodisme, is belangrijk in de Geschiedenis van de hymnodie vanwege zijn gebruik van gemeentezang in zijn opwekkingsbeweging (het Methodisme) en vanwege het uitgeven van een aantal liedboeken. Op weg naar Amerika werd hij geconfronteerd met de Duitse liedschat van emigrerende Hernhutters. Hun omgang met liederen sloot aan bij zijn ideeën. In de liedbundels die hij uitgaf publiceerde hij onder meer vertalingen van Duitse en Latijnse. Hij corrigeerde en publiceerde veel van de liederen die zijn broer, Charles Wesley, schreef. Enige van John Wesley's bekendste vertaalde gezangen zijn:

Jesus, thy boundless love to me (origineel van Paul Gerhart)

O thou to whose all-searching sight (origineel van Nicholas von Zinzendorf)

Charles Wesley begon pas liederen te schrijven na zijn bekeringservaring (toen hij al predikant was). Hij schreef meer dan 6500 gezangen over talloze bijbelgedeelten en over allerlei fasen van de CHristelijke ervaring en de theologie. Hij behoort nog steeds tot de wereldwijd meest gezongen gezangdichters. In het Liedboek voor de kerken zijn vertalingen van zijn liederen te vinden: LB 135, 443
